Bhubaneswar:A two-day national seminar on Tribal Development through Preservation of their Culture: Contemporary Issues and Discourses was organised on 8-9 March 2025 in the campus of Council of Analytical Tribal Studies(COATS), Koraput.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Central University of Odisha (CUO) and COATS under the guidance of Prof. Chakradhar Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor, CUO and Prof. P.C. Mohapatra, Director, COATS. Professor Chakradhar Tripathy sent his message of best wishes to all the delegates and participants for the success of the seminar. It was inaugurated in the presence of MLA of Koraput Raghuram Machha, Prof. N. C. Panda, Dean School of Languages, CUO, V. Keerthi Vasan, District Collector and Magistrate of Koraput, Dr. Kapila Khemundu, Associate Professor and HoD, Department of Sociology, CUODr. P. C. Mohapatra, Director COATS, Sanjeeb Kumar Hota, the former Collector of Koraput & former Election Commissioner, Govt. of Odisha and presently Serving as Life Member INTACH Odisha Chapter, and Dr. Ashok Kumar Nanda, Associate Professor, COATS, Koraput.
Raghuram Maccha, MLA, Koraput emphasize tribal culture in the context of present development. He suggested for inviting the community leaders and involve them in such kind of academic activities so that they will carry the message and communicate to their communities.
V. Keerthi Vasan, Collector & Dist. Magistrate Koraput was the Chief Speaker of the inaugural sessionand focused on the uniqueness of the tribal culture. He has suggested for inculcation of socio-cultural values among the present generation who are deviating from their own culture due to impact of modernity and recent trend of economic development.
Professor VirginusXaxadelivered the keynote address on “Tribal development Situation in Post Reform India” where he highlighted that the path of development pursued in the post-reform phase and its impact on the tribal population have not been uniform.
Distinguish Guest SanjibChandra Hota, delivered a message about good elements of tribal culture and various socio-economic issues in the context of Tribal development.
Prof. (Dr) Narasingha Charan Panda, Dean, School of Languages, Central University of Odisha, highlighted about the reach culture of the tribes and their traditional knowledge system.
Prof. P.C. Mohapatra has delivered welcome address and gave message to all the delegates, dignitaries, faculty members, students and staff who were present in the Seminar regarding the commitment of the COATS and how the institute is striving for the preservation of tribal culture through research and documentation.
The inaugural session of the began with the Desia song sung by Shri Ranjan Mahuria. Dr. Kapila Khemundu introduced the Guest and Dr. Ashok Kumar Nanda has delivered the formal Vote of thanks. Dr. Saurav Gupta, Assistant Professor, DJMC, CUO has compared the programme and managed the stage.
The two-day seminar was successfully organized with the presence of around 85 research scholars from different parts of the country have presented their papers in various technical sessions. Students of Dept. of Sociology, Anthropology, and Economics from CUO and COATS faculty of both the institutions were present on this occasion.
The core message emerged from the seminar is there should be a different yardstick in government policy relating to welfare programme like health, education and livelihood. In case of displacement of Tribals and others in any project likely to be displaced families to be identified first before commencement of the Project.
In the valedictory session Prof. S.K. Palita (Retd), former Dean, SBCNR and former Vice-Chancellor I/c, Prof. Jagabandhu Samal, COATS, Prof. Minaketan Behera, Chairperson, CISLS, JNU, Professor Rabi Narayan Patra, Visiting Professor COATS, focused on the how the development of tribes can be possible through the preservation of their culture. Prof. Satya Narayan Ratha (Retd), former Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, Sambalpur University highlighted tribal issues argued stated that the use of word “Tribe” itself is derogatory and should be alternatively used as indigenous people as they are the early settlers of this Indian subcontinent.
The distinguish academicians, Prof. Maguni Behera, Prof. Saubhagya Ranjan Padhy, Prof. Jagabandhu Samal, Dr. Latika Mishra, Dr. Rajendra Padhy, Shri Amulya Mohapatra, Sri Narayan Panda, Shri Rabi Satpathy, Dr. Shiba Prasad Gantayat, Dr. Kartik Lenka, Dr. Ganesh Prasad Sahoo, Dr. Sony Parhi, Dr. Pradosh Ratha, Dr. Chakradhar Padhan, Dr. Debabrata Panda, Dr. Pradosh Kumar Swain, Dr. Sabitri Majhi, Dr. Gopinath Pradhan, and other faculty members from CUO and COATS were present on the occasion.
Distinguish Social Worker namely Prabhakar Adhikari, Pragati, Pradeep Mishra from FES, Susant Balbantray from Prastuti, and others were present on the occasion.
On behalf of the Central University of Odisha the faculty members like Prof. Rathikant Kumbhar, Dr. Deepthi Shanker, Dr. Minati Sahoo, Dr. B.K. Srinivas, Dr. Phagunath Bhoi, Dr. Nupur Pattnaik, Dr. Elisa Mohanty, Dr. Sabhagya Laxmi Singh, Dr. Manas Kumar Malik, Dr. Priyambada Pradhan, Dr. Partha Pratim Das, students and Research Scholar from the Department of Sociology, Department of Anthropology and Department of Economics were actively participated in the Seminar. Dr. Narendra Kumar Ratha delivered a formal vote of thanks in the valedictory session.
