‘Keep track’ of critical tax info – IRS reveals last minute tips before filing deadline and how to avoid delays

THE IRS has revealed last minute tips to know before the tax deadline, and what to avoid to save on delays.

It has now been made easier than ever for taxpayers to file, and to know how to get your refund as quickly as you can.

The Internal Revenue Service has improved its online tools to enhance the service for taxpayers, according to its website.

Information return documents have been added to individual IRS accounts, consolidating every important document in one location.

This step makes it easier for taxpayers to filer their returns without faults, as the once daunting process has been modernized for millions of Americans.

The first forms that will be added are Form W-2, a Wage and Tax Statement and Form 1095-A, a Health Insurance Marketplace Statement.

It has previously been revealed that the best way to file is to electronically file your return and choose a direct deposit as your refund method.

This gives your cash no chance of being lost or destroyed because it’s all being done digitally.

The U.S. Sun has also reported on what not to do, as a TikTok trend began to circulate advising people to claim obscure credits.

This could include writing off your car or claiming your pet as a guard dog.

Tax professionals have said that this actually delays legitimate refunds as the IRS has cracked down on it in the past few years.

The IRS said: “Instead of looking to ill-informed information on social media, a better option for taxpayers is to learn what scams are trending and to speak to a trusted tax professional.”

Jackson Hewitt chief tax officer Mark Steber added: There’s usually some credibility in the claim, the credit, the deduction.

“It does exist, but not in the way they phrase it and certainly not in the way they’re intending it.

“…If you leave off the earned income credit, which about one out of five do every year, or you leave off a deduction related to your self-employment the IRS doesn’t … add back deductions, they don’t add back credits, you don’t get a bigger refund from the IRS.

“You leave it off, it stays off.”

Creating an online account can also greatly simplify the process, and a little-known online tool can be a great way to track your cash.

This helpful program helps you check the status of your income tax returns within only 24 hours.

Using the online tool Where’s My Refund?, you can check the status of your income tax refund within 24 hours of e-filing and generally within four weeks of filing a paper return.

All that’s needed is your Social Security number or your induvial taxpayer ID number, your filing status and the refund amount calculated on your tax return.

    TAXES MADE EASY

The U.S. Sun has been following the ongoing tax season, and had exclusive chats with tax experts to gain their advice.

Paul Miller, CPA and managing partner at Miller & Company LLP, said: “Make sure you’re prepared and compare all of your documents to your prior year’s return.

“Work with your CPA, who can verify that all of your information is accurate.”

    2025 Tax Season

Tax season started on January 27 and folks must have theirs completed filed on April 15.

Those who fail to file by that time may face penalties.

However, taxpayers who need more time may file for an extension – this gives them until October 15.

The way to do this is by filling out Form 4868, the Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

This can be done by mail, online with an IRS e-filing partner, or through a tax professional.

While there’s no set schedule, the IRS revealed that taxpayers may receive refunds within 21 days of filing.

Just be sure to avoid making mistakes on any forms as that could tack on extra time.

Those filing through mail will likely get their returns within a month or could even face delays as the IRS processes millions.

As of January 31, the average refund amount totaled $1,928, per the IRS.

This is compared to the $1,395 for the same period in 2024.

The average direct deposit refund for 2025 was even higher, the IRS said, at $2,069.

To check the status of your refund, The IRS has an online tool called Where’s My Refund?

This works within 24 hours of e-filing and generally within four weeks of filing a paper return.

Miller added that your CPA (Certified Public Accountant) will be able to pull your wage and income transcripts from the IRS.

Chris Rivera, CPA and founder of The Ecommerce Accountants, told The US Sun that customer service could suffer as the risk of delays continues to hang over the heads of millions.

Rivera noted: “Reduced resources could also impact the IRS’s ability to upgrade or maintain its processing systems, further contributing to backlogs.

“Additionally, customer service response times could suffer, making it harder for taxpayers to get answers about their refunds.”
