The San Diego Sharks basketball team, as part of The Basketball League (TBL), have their home opener Sunday against the Long Beach Blue Waves.

The Sharks will enter their fourth season since starting in 2022 on a streak of three-consecutive playoff appearances in TBL. The team is about more than just competing on the court, as team owner and former minor-league basketball player Tyler Sickmeyer emphasized the focus on community.

“That’s something that’s really important for us is to go out and connect in the community and to make sure that we’re giving value before we ever worry about what the community can do for us,” Sickmeyer said.

Sickmeyer said he wants the team to become the most successful non-NBA affiliated team in the country, and part of that starts with accessibility. Tickets to the games are free, as well as parking as the team relies on sponsor revenue.

Sickmeyer runs a marketing agency called Fidelitas during the day, and runs the Sharks by night. The team owner wants fans to know that games have never been easier to attend, and that he thinks it is a competitive advantage to not have a pro basketball team in the city.

“Pro sports have never been more accessible for San Diegans regardless of income level,” he said.

Sunday’s game tips off at 5 p.m. at Mira Mesa High School, and tickets can be found here.
