The Roosevelt girls basketball team’s hopes of winning its third consecutive state title came to an end Friday morning at the Denver Coliseum.
Fifth-seeded Green Mountain maintained slight leads throughout a hard-fought affair to knock off the fourth-seeded Rough Riders 46-42 in the Class 5A state tournament’s third round.
While the Rams (24-2) move on to the semifinals Thursday back at the Coliseum, Roosevelt ends its season at 22-4.
Before Friday’s season-ending loss, the Rough Riders had won 14 consecutive games.
Green Mountain led after each quarter. The Rams led 11-7 after one quarter, 22-18 at halftime and 41-33 through three quarters.
Prairie advances
Despite being the lower seed, 22nd-seeded Prairie picked up a hard-fought 51-46 win over No. 11 Front Range Baptist in the first round of the 1A boys basketball state tournament Thursday at Kim High School.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 13-11 and advanced to a second-round game against sixth-seeded Kim/Branson (17-4). That game concluded Friday after the Tribune’s deadlines.
Before Thursday’s win, Prairie had lost back-to-back games, including a 50-47 triple-overtime loss to Idalia in districts this past Saturday.
