Stephen A. Smith is giving his seal of approval to chatter that he could make the switch from sports to politics with a White House bid.
"Folks are nuts, number one," the sports commentator told Jimmy Fallon when asked Wednesday on NBC's "The Tonight Show" what he made of recent headlines naming him as a potential future presidential candidate.
"Number two, the Democrat Party, they lost. They had a bad few months. We all know this. And even though there's a lot of qualified Democrats all over the country from a local perspective — governors, mayors, stuff like that — there's no real national voice."
"Enter moi," Smith, 57, said to laughs from the audience.
"They've come to me," he added.
The sports pundit's name has been included in some hypothetical polls for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, garnering roughly 2 percent support among those surveyed.
"I did not ask for this. I don't want to do this. I happen to have a very, very, very good life. A very good job. I'm good," Smith told Fallon, before citing the recent polling.
"I'm saying, wait a minute now, I don't want to do this. But the fact that they're talking about me this way, I must say, I approve this message," Smith said with a grin.
