A student’s grant application has led to two new school-based enterprises in the Windsor High School FFA chapter.
Emma Starck of the Windsor FFA chapter received a $1,000 Equine Breeding Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) national grant.
These grants help students create or expand their SAE projects, which all FFA members are required to do. Projects can include creating or operating an agriculture-related business, working at an agriculture-related business or conducting an agricultural research experience.
Stark’s application — one of 1,238 — also resulted in a Windsor FFA chapter grant of $750. The funds went toward launching two additional school-based enterprise SAEs: laying hens and vermiculture.
A group of students wanted to raise chickens for eggs but couldn’t at their homes, according to Windsor FFA teacher Taylor Eurich. With the grant, the chapter purchased laying hens and supplies. The students have begun working on a school-based enterprise — student-led businesses that provide goods or services — where they will sell the eggs.
Another set of students were interested in growing and fertilizing plants, sparking the idea to start a vermiculture project, in which worms are raised to help create compost. The grant helped the charter purchase worms. The students involved in the project will collect the worm castings to use and sell as fertilizer, and excess worms will be sold as fishing bait.
The FFA chapter will also work with the school’s culinary arts program to collect compost to feed the worms.
“Conversations and brainstorming with passionate students got us to where we are at for the projects that the grant has funded,” Eurich said.
