Members of the Greeley Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team recovered a vehicle Wednesday afternoon from the lake at Sanborn Park after police received a tip Tuesday including an overhead image of the lake that showed what appeared to be a vehicle under the water.
Police say the vehicle — a Jeep Patriot — was reported stolen in 2017, but the department is unsure exactly when it was abandoned in the lake. The vehicle’s color wasn’t identifiable upon recovery, police said.
Dive team members entered the lake three separate times Wednesday — about 9 a.m. to confirm the object was a vehicle, about noon to devise a final plan and about 1 p.m. to hook the vehicle to be removed from the lake, according to firefighters.
Battalion Chief and Dive Team Lead John Forster said they had the vehicle out of the water before 1:30 p.m.
“It went really well,” Forster said. “Very minimal to no damage at all to the park, to the area or to the body of water itself.”
Greeley Police Public Information Officer Kristen Duus said the eastbound lane of 20th Street was blocked for a couple of hours, and both lanes were closed temporarily while they pulled the vehicle out of the lake.
Along with police and firefighters, the Greeley Office of Emergency Management also helped remove the vehicle.
