The Greeley City Council on Tuesday proclaimed this month as Women’s History Month, paying tribute to the many contributions women and historic groups have made to the city.
“The role of American women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued in literature, teaching and study of American history,” Mayor Pro Tem Dale Hall said.
President Ronald Reagan made the first proclamation of Women’s History Month in 1987, calling upon all Americans to honor women’s achievements. Women have been at the heart of every political movement, from the abolitionist movement to the civil rights movement and many others, as they have provided most of the volunteer work throughout history.
“Women have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural and social roles in every sphere of the city,” Hall said. “Women constitute a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside the home.”
Hall concluded the city’s proclamation by encouraging Greeley residents to participate in any events and activities held to celebrate Women’s History Month.
The city also urged residents to support the many women-led groups in the city, such as the League of Women Voters and the Daughters of the American Revolution, who were present to receive the proclamation.
