A weekend for HerStory: Women celebrating women this weekend in Greeley

A two-day art show in Greeley this weekend will celebrate women supporting women, as part of a local nod to March as Women’s History Month.

For the third straight year, a Greeley artist and teacher has organized the show for women and by women to celebrate them as people and to facilitate friendships, acquaintances and “meaningful connection,” Felisha Bustos said.

Bustos is the organizer of HerStory, which links women to talk about their lives and to share their stories through art.

“It’s not about the art being perfect,” Bustos said. “It’s about a heart-to-heart connection, and the art is a gift you give. It’s about building positive relationships.”

The women’s works will be open to the public during a reception from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kimberly’s Event Center, 1029 8th Ave., Greeley. The art will then be on display Monday through March 30 at the LINC Library, 501 8th Ave., Greeley.

Tickets to the show and reception are $20 for attendees 18 and older. Children 17 and younger are admitted free of charge. Tickets are available at herstoryconnects.com.

The entertainment lineup during the reception will feature primarily female performers including the folk music of Deborah Chastain and Friends from 1-2 p.m.

Greeley resident and artist Felisha Bustos started HerStory, an art-based project for women and by women, in 2023 to allow for and unity among women. Bustos’ goal with HerStory is for women to share their stories with another, to celebrate their lives as people to facilitate friendships, acquaintances and “meaningful connection,” she said. The women involved in HerStory pair up and talk with another woman and then create a piece of art in honor of their muse. A reception and exhibit to show the art will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kimberly’s Event Center, 1029 8th Ave. in Greeley. The HerStory weekend continues all day Sunday at Balance Movement Yoga, 1535 8th Ave. Instructors will be on-site from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. to teach classes on a variety of subjects including yoga, dance, art, vocal activation and Reiki, which is a Japanese technique of healing and relaxation.

The classes are open to everyone. The cost is $10 per class or four classes for $30.

Bustos said the HerStory concept is a creative way to celebrate Women’s History Month. March has been Women’s History Month since 1987. March 8 is recognized as International Women’s Day in multiple countries.

This year, 113 women participated in HerStory, continuing the event’s annual growth. Sixty-four of the women live in Colorado, 20 are from out of state, 14 are teenagers and four live outside of the U.S. Bustos said 47 women participated in the first year in 2023 and 66 joined last year.

The women were matched through multiple random drawings, with the most recent in mid-January. They then talked with one another and created art to honor the life of their muse. The art each woman chose for her subject could take any form: painting, sculpture, pottery, poetry, a piece of creative writing or even baking.

Greeley resident Carol Humphrey opted to create a painting for her muse. She’s participating in HerStory for the second year. Humphrey became interested in the event after taking art classes with Bustos at the Active Adult Center in Greeley.

HerStory reminded Humphrey that there is more to a person than what we might see with a superficial look.

“We make a perception,” Humphrey said. “We don’t know the whole story.

“You can see someone walking down the street, but that’s not their story.”
