On Tuesday, Virat Kohli smashed his way through a fine 84, that took India into the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as the team beat Australia by four wickets. During his innings, the 36-year-old went past 8,000 runs in chases, through his career, and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar. Earlier in the tournament, he had become the third player only to amass 14,000 ODI runs as well.
Now, come the final on March 9, against New Zealand or South Africa, Virat Kohli will have a chance to get to two other records as well. For starters, he is just 46 runs away from Chris Gayle, to become the highest run-getter in all Champions Trophy events. And then, he is also in the reckoning to become the highest-scorer in this edition of the tournament.
Let’s just talk about the first record only, that shows the longevity of Kohli — the batsman. He played his first CT in 2009, and in 17 matches has gone on to score 746 runs at an average of 82.88. That involves a ton and six fifties as well. Only Chris Gayle has more runs in the Champions Trophy than him — 791 in 17 innings, and Virat, given the form he is in, can well surpass that.
Interestingly, none of the current crop of players come close to Virat’s record. The next best is Joe Root, who has 656 runs in 12 matches. Rohit Sharma has 585 runs in 14 matches. That only shows his supremacy. Then, talking about Champions Trophy 2025 — he is currently at the third spot with 217 runs in four matches.
England’s Ben Duckett is topping the charts with 217 runs at an average of 75.66, followed by Root at 225 runs. Forget these two players — as Virat will most likely surpass them — but the real challenge could come from Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill too. They have 195, and 157 runs in the tournament, respectively.
