Donald Trump has said Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table and sign a minerals deal after receiving a letter from Volodymyr Zelensky.
In an address to a joint session of Congress the US president said he was “working tirelessly” to end the “savage conflict” in Ukraine and added he “appreciated” that Zelensky sent the letter “which he sent just a little while ago”.
He also said that his administration had “simultaneously” had “serious discussions with Russia” and received “strong signals” that it is “ready for peace”.
“Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” he asks. “It’s time to end the senseless war.”
The US president also criticised European countries for spending “more money buying Russian oil and gas” than on “defending Ukraine”.
In his address Trump said: “I want (the war in Ukraine) to stop.
“Europe has sadly spent more money buying Russian oil and gas than they have spend on defending Ukraine, by far.
“Think of that. And we’ve spent perhaps $350bn, like taking candy from a baby. That’s what happened.
“And they’ve spent $100bn, what a difference that is. And we have an ocean separating us.”
Trump’s claim of US spending is well above estimates, which put the figure at somewhere between $120bn and $183bn.
Trump also read out the missive he had received from Zelensky.
“The letter reads, Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.
“Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians, he said, my team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.
“Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it at any time that is convenient for you.”
