Cubs Prospect Notes: Caissie, Cruz, Horton, Alcántara, Ballesteros, Martin

Today, MLB Pipeline unveiled the Chicago Cubs’ new top-30 prospect list for the 2025 season, and I plan to dig in today on the updated rankings and scouting reports. You pick up so many things that you might not have known – for example, remember how Fernando Cruz had a disappointing Dominican Summer League debut after being the Cubs’ largest IFA bonus ever? Well, that seems to be in large part because he hurt his shoulder in the first game, which not only cost him time but also left him not quite at 100% until the fall.

Other Cubs prospect notes …

This looks to be a great sign as Owen Caissie rehabs his groin injury:

    — The Setup Man – Chicago Cubs YT Channel (@SetupManKyle) March 4, 2025 Love to hear more about what Cade Horton has been working on as he comes back from a mostly-lost 2024 season:

“Sometimes as pitchers, we can get so robotic and just ‘pick up your leg, break your hands [and] go.’”Cade Horton wants to get back to his roots — which means being more athletic — as he looks to reach the majors in 2025.

    — Andy Martínez (@andy-martinez.bsky.social) 2025-02-24T23:35:46.716Z Horton has also been getting some tips from Jameson Taillon, who was himself a top pitching prospect that dealt with injury issues early on. So far so good on the spring for Horton, even as the Cubs are clearly going to be very careful with him. He’s reportedly been sitting 95-97 mph with the fastball in BP, and the curveball and change still seem to be possible future pitches for him (keep in mind that the slider remains elite). For now, everything looks good for him to debut at Iowa relatively early in the year (delayed not because of his subscapularis injury from last year, but just maybe because the Cubs want to manage his innings). MLB Pipeline solicited input on each organization, wanting one prospect who is standing out. For the Cubs, via Jordan Bastian, it’s Kevin Alcántara: “‘The Jaguar’ continues to flash his potential after making his MLB debut in a short big league stint last September. Alcántara, the Cubs’ No. 6 prospect in 2024 per MLB Pipeline, entered the spring looking to earn a spot on the Cubs’ Opening Day roster and add depth to the club’s outfield, which he’ll likely play some sort of role in this summer regardless of where he starts the season. Through his first seven Cactus League games, Alcántara has certainly looked the part, batting .375 (6-for-16) with four RBIs, two doubles, two walks and a stolen base.” Alcántara similarly got praise at The Athletic:

Kevin Alcántara has always had the raw tools to be a star. As he continues to get stronger, he continues to tap into his vast potentials. “He can be a superstar.” t.co/4c3Oh0wlUL

    — Sahadev Sharma (@sahadevsharma) March 2, 2025 Moises Ballesteros got the profile treatment at The Chicago Tribune, and he has continued to impress at Cubs camp. Everyone knows he can hit, but tapping into more of the pull-side power is a next-level goal for him at the plate. Behind the plate, it’s just continuing to get those reps. “Experience catching is a real goal for him and in the drill work exposure to good players, that was the goal,” Craig Counsell said, per the Tribune. “He’s not a finished product catching so we just want him to keep taking strides, and a lot of it’s just receiving work, receiving work, receiving work. … He has very good instincts for the game so that part of it he’s very capable, it’s not a development goal. That part he will be very good at.” Lefty relief prospect Riley Martin was recently sent out from big league camp, but he does have a possible MLB future, which is a huge win for a guy who almost became a pharmacist instead:

Riley Martin was on his way to pharmacy school, he thought. Then, he was drafted by the #Cubs.“I called [SIU-Edwardsville] and said, ‘Hey, yeah, I’m not gonna come. I got this other option.’”On his journey that his on the doorstep of the majors: t.co/3g6W5Un96Q

Rooting for a healthy year for @kohlrf in 2025! He looked ready to take some big steps forward in 2024 before injury derailed his season. He said he was feeling good when we spoke on Sunday! #Cubs #CubsProspects #ST2025 pic.twitter.com/ACSkEAjFLT
