Notable this week: No. 1 Canyon, No. 2 Orange Lutheran and No. 3 JSerra — the top three teams in the Orange County preseason rankings — remain in their respective spots entering the third week of the regular season. … Aliso Niguel, which wasn’t ranked in the preseason top 10, climbs to No. 10 after an upset of El Modena and a tie against Mater Dei.
GIRLS SOFTBALL TOP 25
(Records through Monday, March 3)
1. Canyon (5-0): Bella Settembro pitched a shutout against Yorba Linda and threw a complete game in a 2-1 win against South Torrance.
2. Orange Lutheran (3-0): Kai Minor went 6 for 9 with four RBIs and freshman Rylee Silva earned two wins and a save as the Lancers went 3-0 at the Norco showcase.
3. JSerra (5-1): Liliana Escobar went 3-0 at the Norco showcase with 37 strikeouts, including 15 against Corona Santiago.
4. Pacifica (4-1): Junior left fielder Abby Amezquita is 6 for 14 with a double and triple.
5. Santa Margarita (5-2-1): Payton Kennedy went 3-0 with 23 strikeouts and hit .529 with five home runs and 10 RBIs as the Eagles went 5-2-1 at the Waimea tournament in Hawaii.
6. Mater Dei (4-2-1): The Monarchs posted a 2-2-1 record at the Norco showcase.
7. El Modena (2-1): The Vanguards lost center fielder Jocelyn Alatorre to a knee dislocation in a 3-2 loss against Aliso Niguel.
8. Rosary (5-1): Sophomore shortstop Jenna Caldera is 14 for 20 with 10 runs scored and sophomore first baseman K’lene Gutierrez is 11 for 19 with 14 RBIs.
9. Fullerton (4-1): Malaya Majam-Finch and Hayley Brock have each hit two home runs.
10T. Aliso Niguel (5-3-1): Ella Haugo and Tessa Cowsill have each belted two home runs.
10T. Los Alamitos (0-4): Two of the Griffins’ losses are against powerhouses Norco and La Mirada.
