Courts ‘in chaos’ as national video link system goes down

The video system used to hold remote court hearings and beam defendants into trials has gone down this morning, leaving courts across England and Wales “in chaos”.

The Cloud Video Platform (CVP), which is used by witnesses, barristers, prisons, journalists and all parties involved in court cases to attend remotely, was not functioning on Tuesday morning.

The i Paper was unable to attend a trial over an alleged terror plot at Sheffield Crown Court, where staff said they were unable to use CVP because of a “national issue”.

One barrister at another court, who did not want to be named, said they had also been told of a “national issue”, and that some lawyers were also reporting technical issues with a separate system that is used to prepare and share information in crown courts. “It’s absolute chaos,” they added.

The Criminal Bar Association said it had received reports of outages with the CVP video hearing system from courts including Birmingham, Canterbury, Southwark, Aylesbury, Leicester, Derby, Luton, Lincoln and Peterborough.

It means that cases involving people who cannot be physically present in the court cannot go ahead. That includes defendants appearing from prison by video link and barristers who are attending cases remotely.
