A man arrested in connection with January’s Pala and Lilac fires remained in custody Saturday, officials said.
According to a news release from Cal Fire, investigators arrested Ruben Vasquez, 48, Friday on two counts of felony arson.
He is being held at the Vista Detention Facility with bail set at $500,000, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. He is set to be arraigned Tuesday.
The blazes started 25 minutes apart near Interstate 15 and state Route 76 in the early-morning hours of Jan. 21 in gusty Santa Ana conditions. They burned nearly 100 acres, prompting evacuations of hundreds of residents.
Witness reports helped investigators identify Vasquez as a suspect, Cal Fire officials said. An investigation report will be referred to the county District Attorney’s Office.
