Microsoft to Retire Skype in Favor of Microsoft Teams NEWS

Skype users have options to transition to Teams.

Microsoft has announced that it will retire Skype in May 2025, transitioning its focus to Microsoft Teams (free) as the primary platform for consumer communications. This strategic move aims to streamline offerings and better meet evolving customer needs by consolidating services into a single, modern hub for communication and collaboration.

Teams provides users with familiar features such as one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing, alongside enhanced capabilities including meeting hosting, calendar management, and community building—all at no cost. As the go-to solution for hundreds of millions globally, Teams has experienced a remarkable fourfold increase in meeting minutes among consumer users over the past two years, underscoring its effectiveness in fostering connectivity across work, school, and home environments.

By focusing on Teams, Microsoft is committed to delivering an enriched user experience that not only simplifies communication but also empowers users to collaborate more effectively. The transition from Skype to Teams reflects the company’s dedication to innovation and its responsive approach to customer feedback.

As we take this next step with Teams, we’re excited about the opportunities ahead. We look forward to continuing to support people’s everyday connections, starting by making it easy to log into Teams with their Skype account.

    Transitioning away from Skype

Microsoft is offering different avenues for Skype users to stay with their products. Here are the options they outlined in their recent blog post.

Move to Microsoft Teams for free. Microsoft plans to roll out the ability for Skype users to sign into Teams (free) on any supported device using their Skype credentials–starting today with those who are part of both the Teams and Skype Insider programs. By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so you can quickly pick up where you left off. Export your Skype data. If a user prefers not to migrate to Teams, they can instead export their data including chats, contacts, and call history.

Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, giving users time to explore Teams and decide on the option that works best for them.

How to Get Started with Teams for Free

Download Teams on your device from the official Microsoft Teams website.   Log in with your Skype credentials.   Start using Teams with all your Skype chats and contacts ready to go.

To assist in this transition, Microsoft has prepared a step-by-step guide to help get started with Teams and make the most of its features.
