Zach Collins Dishes, Another Josh Giddey Double-Double, Building Through the Draft, and Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

The Chicago Bulls may have only one victory in their last seven games, but they have played some surprisingly good basketball since the All-Star break. Their previous three losses have come within 5 points or less, while their one win came in blowout fashion on the road.

Am I still cheering for a stumble down the standings and praying to the lottery gods every night? Of course! But I’ll happily take some aesthetically pleasing basketball along the way!

© Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Despite the losses, I imagine head coach Billy Donovan is enjoying how his young guys are playing. While the team is still chucking up their fair share of three-point shots, we have seen them create a lot more offense with aggressive and smart off-ball movement. Their victory over Philly was made possible by some great cutting and a clear willingness to make the extra pass. I had doubts that we would see similar success against the Clippers’ third-ranked defense, but the Bulls made it happen. The Bulls dished an assist on 20 of their first 25 made baskets against Los Angeles and finished with 35 on the night. Big man Zach Collins – who earned his second consecutive start in place of Nikola Vucevic – made his presence felt in this department. He finished with a season-high 6 assists, which included a couple of beautifully placed bounce passes at the top of the key that set up some easy layups for his teammates. We also watched him make some very quick relay passes from the middle of the floor, which felt reminiscent of what we’ve seen Nikola Vucevic do plenty of times before. I made mention of Collins’ underrated passing when the Bulls acquired him in the Zach LaVine trade, and I hope it’s something we can continue to see on display over these final 23 games. Not only could it help boost his trade value, but it’s an important skill set that helps get the team’s many young players involved. Of course, Josh Giddey also had something to do with the Bulls’ excellent ball movement. He finished with 12 assists, several of which came out of being patient in the pick-and-roll. We all know what he can do as an open floor playmaker, but it was fun to watch him run a little two-man game at times with Collins. The double-digit assist gave him his fourth-straight double-double, by the way. He now joins Michael Jordan and Clem Haskins as the only guards in franchise history to accomplish such a streak, per K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Sports Network. Josh Giddey Has Put Together An Incredible (And Technically Historic) Three Games What Giddey has done over the last week-plus is worthy of praise, but Will Gottlieb also presented a valid question over at CHGO. Can he keep up this efficient scoring in a diminished role? Look, the fact of the matter is the Bulls are still 1-3 over this strong stretch and have been without multiple key contributors, including Nikola Vucevic two games. Also, if I’m being honest, this late surge for Giddey has me extremely concerned about the looming contract negotiations. The Bulls’ front office has been taken advantage of many times before, so let’s hope they can remain steadfast in not overpaying the 22-year-old guard. Their previously team-friendly deals with White and Dosunmu give me some hope, but neither played anywhere near the level of what Giddey is doing right now before signing those deals. K.C. Johnson delivered one message on repeat during his latest mailbag for Chicago Sports Network: The Bulls plan to build through the draft. Look, that makes me happy to hear, but I’ll believe they stick to that plan when I see it. I also think that plan is pretty hard to accomplish when you aren’t prioritizing a high pick. If they want to start from the ground up, then they need to be putting themselves in a position to select top-level talent. You don’t build through the draft by picking No. 7-14 every year. That’s what the last front office did before they got the boot. A healthy Lonzo Ball is so much fun …
