The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement team helped investigate and secure a conviction for an animal cruelty case involving the death of a small senior Shih Tzu service dog named Poochie.
Jeffrey Todd Buntich, 25, was sentenced Feb. 25.
According to a statement from the San Diego Humane Society, Buntich threatened to kill the dog before violently kicking it at a Motel 6 in El Cajon. Poochie sustained severe internal injuries and, despite emergency veterinary care, had to be euthanized to prevent further suffering.
The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department arrested Buntich in November 2024 on a felony warrant.
He was then extradited to San Diego, where he pled guilty to one felony count of animal cruelty. He was sentenced to a year in jail, two years of probation, and a five-year ban on animal ownership on Feb. 25.
“This case is a tragic reminder of the consequences of violence against animals,” said Jace Huggins, Chief of San Diego Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement.
“While nothing can undo the suffering Poochie endured, we are grateful to see justice served and hope this sentencing sends a strong message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.”
The San Diego Humane Society is asking anyone who witnesses animal cruelty or neglect to report it immediately by calling (619) 299-7012.
