Professor of Seismology at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), Amr al-Sharkawy, assured that an earthquake reported near Helwan, Cairo on Tuesday morning was weak and is no cause for concern.
Sharkawy explained that the strength of the earthquake reached 1.8 on the Richter scale.
During a phone interview with the Sada el-Balad channel, he explained that earthquakes occur daily, including in Egypt.
Sharkawy also noted that there is a difference between the strength of an earthquake and its size – so that even though some citizens felt it, the Helwan earthquake was weak.
He also assured that Egypt is not located within any seismic belt, adding that the National Seismic Network monitors and records all earthquakes around the clock.
