When most people think of birthday cake, they imagine layers of fluffy vanilla or rich chocolate, topped with candles and surrounded by a chorus of "Happy Birthday." But not me. My birthday falls right in the heart of Mardi Gras season, which means there's only one kind of birthday cake for me: King cake.
Growing up in Louisiana, King cake was always my go-to. Why would I want something as ordinary as a sheet cake when I could have a sweet, cinnamon-laced King cake covered in icing and sprinkled with glittering purple, green and gold sugar? It was a no-brainer.

A King cake is a traditional Mardi Gras dessert enjoyed throughout Louisiana and beyond during Carnival season. It's a sweet, brioche-style cake, often braided and shaped into a ring, decorated with purple, green and gold sugar or icing, which are colors that symbolize justice, faith and power.
The origins of King cake trace back to France and Spain, where similar cakes were associated with Epiphany (Three Kings’ Day). In Louisiana, King cake became a Mardi Gras staple, marking the season of celebration leading up to Lent.
Classic King cakes have a cinnamon-sugar filling, but modern versions can be stuffed with cream cheese, praline, fruit fillings and more. Each King cake contains a small plastic baby figurine (originally meant to represent baby Jesus). The person who finds the baby in their slice is crowned "king" or "queen" for the day and is responsible for buying the next King cake.

My Absolute Favorite King Cake Spot: Lilah's
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lilahs King Cakes (@lilahskingcakes)
For years, my King Cake of choice came from Lilah’s in Shreveport.
Lilah's Bakery has been delighting locals and visitors since 2006 and they have earned a reputation for offering some of the best King cakes in the region.
Operating primarily during the Carnival season, which kicks off in early January, Lilah's dedicates itself to perfecting the art of the King Cake and they offer an impressive array of King cake flavors. From traditional cinnamon to innovative creations like Bavarian cream, fruit-filled, cream cheese (which is my favorite) and even savory options like boudin, there's a Lilah's King cake for everyone.
This is one reason Lilah's is my favorite—because if you're going to have King cake for your birthday, why not go all out?
But then I moved to Central Pennsylvania, where King cakes are not exactly lining the bakery shelves. I quickly realized that if I wanted to keep my birthday tradition alive, I would have to start ordering my cake. Luckily, Lilah's offers nationwide shipping! This service ensures that everyone can enjoy their favorite King cake flavors, no matter where they are in the country.
One important note: Be sure to double-check shipping addresses to guarantee timely and fresh deliveries, and if you plan to have a King cake shipped during Carnival season, you will want to order it early. Lilah's often sells out!

King Cake Plan B: Joe Gambino's
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Gambino’s Bakery (@gambinosbakery)
When Lilah's does sell out, I have a Plan B- Joe Gambino’s Bakery in New Orleans!
Gambino’s is one of the most famous and beloved bakeries in New Orleans, best known for its King cakes. Since 1949, Gambino’s has been serving up delicious sweets that have become staples for special events, especially during Mardi Gras season.
Gambino’s King Cake is a must-have during Carnival season and they ship nationwide, so no one has to miss out on Mardi Gras, no matter where they live.

Will I Ever Go Back to Regular Birthday Cake?
Honestly? Probably not. There’s something special about keeping this tradition alive, even from a distance. It’s not just about the cake itself (although it’s delicious). It’s about the connection to home, to Mardi Gras and to the celebrations I grew up with.
Getting a King Cake delivered to Central Pennsylvania isn't the same as picking one up fresh from a bakery in Louisiana but so far, Lilah's and Gambino’s have come through every time, and as soon as I cut into that first slice, it’s like I’m back home.
Of course, eating King cake outside of Louisiana also means explaining it to everyone around me. Up here, Mardi Gras isn’t a whole season; it’s just one day on the calendar—if that. People don’t understand why I’m so excited about a cake with a tiny plastic baby inside, but I’m always happy to educate and once they try a slice, they get it.
Sure, I could order a fancy bakery cake (and I do love Pennsylvania Dutch baked goods) or try something new. But why mess with a good thing? When it’s my birthday, there will always be a King Cake on the table—no candles necessary, just beads and a plastic baby!
