Sunshine and Buttercups Thursday my angler friends. Did you know that there is currently a “War on Bass?” Yup a bass war? Really? Here’s what’s up. There is a growing movement across the United States that want all non native (“ invasive” ) species of fish to be eliminated. For example. There is a native fish that is only found in Clear Lake, it is called Hitch. Now there those who want us all to believe that the bass in Clear lake is the reason for the Hitch’s numbers to be declining . Man, while fishing on Clear Lake Teresa and I have seen schools of what had to be a million or more Hitch. So, we know that the Hitch are still alive and well in Clear Lake. That’s good news! But, lets say that the decline of Hitch in Clear Lake is true. Which could make sense. What is not being said is that there has also been a decline in numbers of all fish that live in Clear Lake. Local anglers believe that the mis-management of aquatic spraying is really the reason for the kill off of all species of fish. So, you can’t blame the bass. It’s humans. Here is a question. Is there a length of time when a government introduced species of fish is no longer considered to to be invasive? Is there a length of time that a “non native” fish can become “native” ? One hundred years? How long?- It’s got me thinking. Play with me a little here…Lets continue this thought process.
Are the people from the Great Indian Tribes the only true native Americans ? Are all of us who are immigrants or descendants of immigrants non native or invasive ?
Clear Lake: There are nothing but GOOD fishin’ reports coming from our awesome fishery over the mountain. WOW! Many anglers are hooking into bass weighing 5 to 7 pounds! The hot spots are the areas where creeks are entering into the lake. The hitch (one of the bass’ favorite treats) bait fish are moving into the creeks to spawn, and the big bass have followed them. Four to six inch paddle tailed swim baits have been working well.
Lake Mendocino: Boy, there sure are fishermen on the water now. How quickly things can change. So, especially on the week ends, there can be several anglers are on the water. The word has gotten out that the bass have started to move up into the shallows to spawn. Spinnerbaits and slow draggin’ plastics have been working the best. Personally, I had some luck fishing a crankbaits too. We probably have about 3 to 4 weeks to hook into spawning bass. Remember to practice catch and release. So that further generations can continue to enjoy fishing.
Russian River : Due to the rain storms that have been coming in, the steelhead fishin’ has been hit or miss as of late. But if you catch it right the steelhead fishin’ has been ok. There has been a few reports of fishermen catching steelies in the Ukiah Valley area. I heard of a nineteen pounder hooked at the north fork of the Russian River.
Mill Creek Pond The Upper Mill Creek Pond has been the happening place lately…The pond has steelhead/ trout jumping everywhere! It is quite the sight ! Even if you are not a angler you might consider taking a drive up just to watch the trout show. I was talking to a fellow fishermen who told me about what a asset this pond is to have in our community. “ The thing is so great about Mill Creek is that it is a great place for me to take my little kids fishing. The dock that the Ukiah Valley Fish & Wildlife Club built is really cool because it gives my kids a safe place where they can enjoy fishing.”
Blue Lakes: Great news! The Upper Blue Lake is scheduled to receive a trout plant this week. I think that it is the first stock of the season. So, there are now a bunch of trout to be caught. The most successful trout fishermen have been fishin’ out of a boat trolling. Small action discs trailed with a fly, super-duper or spoon has been the ticket. The key is to make sure your set-up is running down to about 15 – 20 feet deep. The gang that fish off the banks along Hwy. 20 have also been hooking into their fair share of rainbows too. The Narrows area and off the docks of Pine Acres and Blue Lodge are also good fishing spots. Try using worms or Powerbait off the bottom.
Good luck!
Lake Pillsbury: The beautiful lake up on the mountain is looking better right now. Even though, the lake is not full/full, it could be soon due to the recent snow pack. The bass and trout fishing has been fair to good ! The bass spawn is about to kick in gear. Look for bass hanging out from cove points at drop offs. Remember, the water temperature in our mountain lake is cooler than Lake Mendocino, so the spawn happens later up there. Look for the male bass up in the shallows looking for their nesting spots. Also I heard that the trout fishing has started to pick up. Anglers trolling the west side of the lake have been hooking in to some nice ones. But wait, that’s not all. The road is as good as it gets right now.. Still, you should take it slow and easy as you work your way up the road. Then, EXHALE! – Fish on!
