AS struggling retailers continue to shutter stores at alarming rates, one state has already seen a beloved chain disappear completely.
The brand is preparing to shut down at least 200 stores as part of its bankruptcy process.
Forever 21, the popular fast-fashion retailer operated by Authentic Brands Group and Simon Property Group, has confirmed the closing of its location in Boise, Idaho.
The store, located at Boise Towne Square Mall, was the only Forever 21 store in the state.
An employee at the store confirmed with BoiseDev that the location is due to close, and that the store is already beginning its liquidation process.
The 16,000 square foot store is one of the largest spaces in the entire mall, which has already seen the closures of other hurting retail brands.
Brookfield properties, which owns and manages the Boise Towne Square Mall, purchased Forever 21 alongside Authentic Brands and Simon Property Group in 2020.
It also controls large shares of JCPenney, Brooks Brothers, and Aéropostale.
The planned closure of 200 stores will leave Forever 21 brand with less than 400 retail locations – down more than half from its peak of at least 800.
Authentic Brands CEO Jamie Salter said in a conference that acquiring Forever 21 was “probably the biggest mistake I made.”
FASHION FACTS
The fast-fashion industry has seen a rapid transformation since 2020, with the rise of online retailers like Shein and Temu dominating the market.
Competition from other brick and mortar stores like H&M and Zara has also curbed Forever 21’s growth.
Forever 21 filed for bankruptcy in September 2019 after its sales slowed and debt rose, along with environmentalists and labor rights groups staining the brand’s reputation.
The company is planning to file for a second bankruptcy soon.
The brand said it had expanded too quickly and was unable to handle rent costs and supply chain investment.
It also failed to adapt to the e-commerce market, at a time when online retail began taking over.
Forever 21’s shrinking retail presence follows a trend of other major store chains disappearing off the map, with 2025 looking to be one of the darkest years for commercial retail.
Quiksilver, Billabong, and Volcom – all operated by Liberated Brands and owned by Authentic Brands – announced that they would be closing all 122 retail locations in the US following Liberated’s bankruptcy filing.
Meanwhile, Kohl’s announced the closure of 27 of its US stores following its own struggles to adapt to the current market landscape.
The Boise Towne Square Mall will be losing its Volcom and Kohl’s locations, in addition to the shuttering Forever 21.
With a number of empty stores, the Boise mall’s vacant space will now add up to 244,000 square feet of unused retail space.
The mall has seen the closures of Sears, Abercrombie, Fossil, Attic Salt, and Forever Flawless in recent years.
