DENVER (KDVR) -- Four people were buried Saturday, including one who died, in two avalanches in Grand County Saturday afternoon, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
The avalanches were reported just hours apart, one near Berthoud Pass and the other west of Grand Lake. The deadly avalanche was the second in a week in a month that has seen more avalanche incidents than last year.
The person who died was buried in the avalanche near Berthoud Pass, on Mines Peak in an area locally known as The Fingers or High Trail Cliffs, according to the CAIC.
The Fingers are a set of steep, rocky, northwest-facing avalanche paths that are easily accessed from the parking area at the summit of Berthoud Pass. The avalanche, reported about 4:45 p.m. Saturday was a large persistent slab avalanche.

The second avalanche Saturday was a couple hours before the Mines Peak one, about 2:30 p.m. on Gravel Mountain.
Four snowmobilers were involved in this one, three of whom were partially buried, according to the CAIC.
Grand County Search and Rescue on Facebook said this avalanche "easily could have been a mass" casualty incident, but fortunately, no one died.
In fact, bystanders and other riding companions assisted in rescuing the buried riders before emergency crews arrived, and no one was injured at all, according to GCSO.
The Sheriff’s Office encouraged anyone recreating in the backcountry to always carry the essential equipment and follow the Colorado Avalanche Information Center - CAIC to get the daily avalanche forecast.
