CSU Rams pull away late to defeat UNLV in Las Vegas

Colorado State pulled away in the final minutes to defeat UNLV, 61-53, Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

With the win, the Rams improved to 18-9 overall and 12-4 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV dropped to 14-13, 8-8.

    CSU led by one at halftime and began the second half on an 8-2 run to go ahead 35-27 with 17:44 remaining in the game, but the Rebels battled back and took a 38-37 lead with 12:37 left.

    The Rams went ahead by eight again at 48-40 with 7:36 to go, but again, UNLV battled back, eventually tying the game at 70 with 4:09 remaining. CSU was finally able to pull away when a layup by Rashaan Mbemba gave them a 55-53 lead with 2:36 remaining.

    That started a 8-0 run by the Rams to end the game.

    Nique Clifford and Kyan Evans led CSU with 13 points apiece. Clifford added 14 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson added 10 points for the Rams, all in the first half.

    CSU jumped out to an early lead and had a 14-2 advantage five minutes into the game. However, the Rebels stormed back, tying it up at 18 with 6:33 left in the first half.

    UNLV took its first lead of the game at 20-18, but the Rams took it back on a 3-pointer by Jaylen Crocker-Johnson with 5:06 remaining before halftime.

    The Rebels battled back and went ahead 26-25 with 27 seconds on the clock, but a basket with six seconds to go have the Rams a 27-26 lead at the break.

    Crocker-Johnson led the Rams, who shot only 39%, with 10 points in the first half.

    CSU will be back in action Tuesday when the Rams travel to Air Force.
