The Chula Vista Police Department announced it will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint somewhere in the city limits on Friday night.

Officers will be stopping drivers from 6 p.m. to midnight to check for alcohol or marijuana impairment as well as proper licensing.

DUI checkpoint locations are typically chosen based on data showing a high number of impaired driving-related  crashes. They are usually announced in advance because of the deterrent effect on potential impaired drivers.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Officer Brian Carter said. “Any prevention  measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic  safety.”

The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a  suspended license.
