Justin Turner is Not Apologizing for the 2017 NLCS

Until he became a Chicago Cubs player this week, fans ’round these parts probably had one primary memory associated with Justin Turner. And it wasn’t a good one.

With the Cubs and Dodgers tied 1-1 in the 9th inning of Game Two of the 2017 NLCS, Turner stepped to the plate against a relief-pitching John Lackey, and sent the Dodgers home a winner:

That blast put the Dodgers up 2-0 in the series, and it pretty much became – whether in foresight or hindsight – the moment that series ended. Moreover, because of what followed for the Cubs, you could argue it was THE SINGULAR MOMENT the competitive window ended for that group of Cubs.

I have hated him for that moment for a very long time.

I’m not over it, of course, but time does have its way of sanding down the edges. Plus, you know, I’m aware that it’s not like he was DOING IT TO Cubs fans in that moment – dude was just trying to win it for his team. Good job.

But all that said, I did find it appropriate and funny that Justin Turner was asked about that 2017 NLCS upon his introduction as a member of the Chicago Cubs. And he said exactly what you’d expect him to say (via Cubs.com):

‘Justin Turner still hears about it when he heads back to his wife’s hometown in Northwest Indiana. There are a lot of Cubs fans in that part of the state, and they remember his devastating postseason walk-off homer against the North Siders eight years ago all too well.

“My answer to that is I’ve made a lot of outs against the Cubs, too,” Turner joked on Thursday. “And I always say, ‘The year before, you guys beat us and won a World Series.’ I mean, give and take a little bit, right?” ….

Turner laughed when asked if he would now apologize to Cubs fans for that home run.

“I’m not apologizing,” he said with a smile.’

Fair enough. Just make sure you do something even more memorable as a Cubs player this year, and we’re all square.
