For a reason known only to them, the New York Yankees have maintained a long-standing player policy prohibiting facial hair. The rule was always stupid, but it felt particularly anachronistic to the current era of sports entertainment and player-first endeavors. But today, in an announcement that takes itself WAY too seriously (… which is just perfectly on brand given the policy in question), the Yankees have repealed their nonsense prohibition.
Yankees Will Allow Facial Hair!
On Friday, Hal Steinbrenner announced the following:
“In recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees — spanning several eras — to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy, and I appreciate their earnest and varied feedback. These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years.
“Ultimately the final decision rests with me, and after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward. It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy.”
… Cool. Welcome to 2025. You didn’t go all the way, as only “well-groomed beards” are allowed. But it’s a start, I guess.
At MLB.com, Bryan Hoch discusses the origins of the policy, which has its roots in 1973: “All players, coaches and male executives are forbidden to display any facial hair other than mustaches [except for religious reasons], and scalp hair may not be grown below the collar,” read a passage in the team’s player manual. “Long sideburns and mutton chops are not specifically banned.”
I’m just happy our long, national nightmare is over.
