Cardinals’ Coach DeBo bringing his ‘match-me’ mentality to Arizona

TEMPE — Self-awareness is a key trait at the NFL level. Having the right energy, especially when working under head coach Jonathan Gannon, is right up there with it.

New Cardinals defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III — aka Coach DeBo — wasted little time showcasing both, whether it be pronouncing his name or passionately talking ball.

Cardinals DL coach Winston DeLattiboudere III (@Coach_DeBo46) has a PSA for Arizona fans and just about everybody else:

“OK, let’s start here. Before anyone starts to butcher my last name, just call me Coach DeBo,” DeLattiboudere said before diving into the Xs and Os during his introductory press conference on Thursday. “You don’t have to hit me with the whole DeLattiboudere. I don’t need all that. … It makes it simple. I want to make sure everyone’s comfortable and good to go.”

While the name abbreviation alone should help players save a breath or two — and reporters an added spellcheck — it’s DeLattiboudere’s passion and energy that stood out as two major building blocks to what he’s about.

For DeLattiboudere, it starts with matching the motor and violence he’s asking of his players.

“In order to be able to jump to where you want to be able to go, you gotta set a standard. I tell my guys, ‘Match me,'” he said. “As hard as you’re going to play is as hard as I’m going to coach. I might even exceed that in coaching. If you want to play with a high level of motor and violence, you’ve gotta match the motor and violence that I coach with.

“Violence doesn’t have to be a bad term in a coaching way. I’m just violently communicating with you in a positive manner. I’m violently springing to Point A to Point B and I’m violently making sure my point gets across, so you’re able to absorb that and play through it. The guys are going to have to match me this year.”

On top of his mentality and energy, DeLattiboudere also brings with him useful relatability being 27 years old.

That could go a long way in connecting with youngsters Darius Robinson and Dante Stills.

All signs point to Robinson making an impact for this defense despite an abbreviated season cut short due to a calf injury and the passing of his mother. Robinson only saw six games as a rookie, but showed clear growth as the reps piled on.

Stills meanwhile continued to be a consistent presence in the trenches after filling in due to injuries to Robinson, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols. Only pass rusher Zaven Collins had more sacks (5.0) than the defensive lineman in 2024 (4.5).

Coach DeBo (Cardinals new DL coach) cannot wait to get to work with young guys Darius Robinson and Dante Stills:

“You watch some of these guys on film and these guys are extremely impressive, “DeLattiboudere said. “I haven’t gotten to everybody, through everybody and things like that, but when you look at guys like Darius and the amount of confidence he has in the rush, the amount he can do with his body from a physicality perspective and level, I can’t wait to help him do what he does even better.

“At the end of the day, it comes down to servicing the guys, servicing players and I can’t wait to service guys like those two.”
