The cause of a fire that burned a residential structure Monday evening was still under investigation Wednesday, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority reported.
UVFA Battalion Chief Ryan Nelson said that crews were dispatched around 9:40 p.m. Feb. 17 to a report of a residential structure fire in the 2900 block of Guidiville Reservation Road in Talmage, with the first firefighters to arrive finding “a building fully involved in flames” and downed power lines.
Not completely sure the lines weren’t active, Nelson said that firefighters did what they could to contain the fire while waiting for Pacific Gas & Electric crews to respond and shut off the meter to the property, as the structure involved was already “past the point of being saved.”
“After I arrived, a kerosene storage tank blew, sending flames 300 feet into the air,” Nelson said, describing the property as so full of vehicles, trailers and large pieces of equipment that it resembled a junkyard.
Once firefighters could safely approach the structure, Nelson said crews were able to begin an “aggressive attack” on the fire, extinguishing the flames before they spread too far into the surrounding materials and vegetation.
According to neighbors on scene, Nelson said, the home that burned had been abandoned and was frequently occupied by squatters and other trespassers, and the people on the property Monday night apparently called 911 to report the fire while leaving the area. Later, UVFA investigators contacted one person who was inside the home at the time of the fire, but he could provide little information regarding its cause, only describing that “suddenly the back of the house was on fire.”
“The cause of the fire is officially undetermined, and at this point appears accidental, as there is no evidence to suggest it was arson,” Nelson said, noting that there were no reported injuries.
Personnel from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
