While the NBA’s All-Star Weekend was largely a flop, Chicago Bulls fans were given something to be excited about.
Rookie Matas Buzelis was invited to compete in two of the league’s biggest events. Initially in town for the iconic Slam Dunk Contest, the 20-year-old received a call to also fill in for the injured Yves Missi in the annual Rising Stars competition. While his squad failed to advance past the first round of the tournament, Buzelis made his presence felt with a highlight slam and a crazy behind-the-back assist.
Buzelis may not have found as much success 24 hours later in the dunk contest – as he failed to complete his first dunk – but his appearance made Bulls history. Only four other players have suited up for the event while sporting a Bulls jersey: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Tyrus Thomas, and Orlando Woolridge.

He is proving to be arguably the highest-upside youngster the Bulls have had in quite some time. Even better, he seems willing to embrace everything that comes along with that.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Bulls revealed a behind-the-scenes look at Buzelis’ trip to San Francisco. The 20-year-old’s personality – which is fueled by both charisma and confidence – shines through from start to finish. We also got a great look at him practicing the dunk he almost pulled off in Round 1 of the contest. He lands that at the Chase Center, and I genuinely think he could have been in the Finals. Bummer.
