Fresh off his hiring as Arizona State athletic director, Graham Rossini didn’t beat around the bush last May when it came to acknowledging that work needed to be done on Desert Financial Arena.
Speaking with Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta for the first time after accepting his new role, Rossini listed DFA renovations as a top priority with a scope centered around better fan experience in today’s age.
Nine months later, Rossini and ASU appear to be onto the next steps of DFA changes.
"We're prepared to make an announcement in a couple months. We're probably looking at a multi-year renovation."

“We’re prepared to make an announcement in a couple months. We’re probably looking at multi-year renovations, significant enhancements into Desert Financial Arena,” Rossini told Bickley & Marotta on Tuesday during Day 1 of Newsmakers Week.
“We’ve heard a lot of feedback from our fans and I’ve said this from Day 1: We’re going to make decisions driven by fan feedback and driven by the things that allow us to enhance a game day for football and basketball and all of our sports for that matter.”

Making any physical changes to the arena — such as adding handrails — would be a welcome sight for ASU fans given the lack thereof over the years.
In 2018, there were plans to renovate the then-called Wells Fargo Arena that would have upgraded the basketball arena on top of adding a venue for ice hockey and women’s gymnastics and wrestling.
But due to logistics and the financial impact from COVID-19, Arizona State abandoned that joint project in 2020 and instead built the 5,000-seat Mullett Arena.
At least for now, the ball is again rolling on DFA upgrades.
“There are some infrastructure improvements that need to be made, but we’re also looking at game day and fan experience and that electricity in the seating bowl,” Rossini added. “When it’s full, it’s awesome. We’ve seen that. It’s a really competitive environment. It’s loud, it’s energetic, but there are some creature comforts. There are some conveniences that it’s lacking.
“It is 50-plus years old, so we’re looking hard at, how do we use several offseasons to get this thing up to code and have a great, unbelievable college experience on the Tempe campus?”
