February 16, 2025 (MALAKAL) – The South Sudanese army (SSPDF) said at least 10 soldiers were killed and 21 others injured in an ambush carried out by armed youths in Upper Nile State on Sunday. The spokesperson for the army, Lul Ruai Kong said the incident occurred in Nasir town. He accused the armed opposition (SPLM-IO), led by South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar, of instigating the ongoing incidents in Nasir County and called for mutual respect between the parties. “The armed youths were incited by opposition forces to cause confusion in the area,” he said. Lul said the armed opposition would be held accountable for violating a ceasefire inked in 2018. The SPLM-IO spokesperson, Lam Paul Gabriel denied the allegations, blaming the army for the attack. “We did not carry out attacks nor incited local youths. The army first attacked civilians in Nasir, prompting the youths to retaliate. The army has issues with the local population,” he said. Clashes between government forces and local residents prompted civilians to abandon Nasir town. The Nasir County Commissioner Gatluak Lew Thiep said the situation remained tense. (ST)
