Authorities in Ontario, Canada, are investigating a case involving two German shepherds that were shot and killed on residential property during an apparent coyote hunt.
The dogs, Hank and Mary Jane, belonged to the property owners, Kaitlin Strong and her husband.
Kaitlin Strong told CBC that she remained shaken after a disturbing ordeal that began Saturday, when the dogs went missing, and ended Monday with the recovery of her dead pets.
“I personally feel unsafe in my home because this is not just a hunting accident — it’s a public safety issue,” Strong said. “They’re firing near houses on land they shouldn’t be on and it’s not just a safety issue for pets and pet owners. It’s also a safety issue for the entire community.”
The Strongs live on a 5-acre property in the village of Belmont. Coyote hunting is allowed on public land on Saturdays, but it’s illegal to hunt on private property without permission from the land owner.

Kaitin Strong told CBC that she heard a gunshot about 15 minutes after letting the dogs run into her backyard woods to play.
The dogs did not respond to her calls, so she began a search. About an hour later, Strong discovered blood and drag marks on the snow.
The bodies of Hank and Mary Jane were recovered Monday by with help from local authorities and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The investigation is being conducted by Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources. One man is reported to have turned himself in to face possible charges, but authorities did not confirm this, citing an ongoing investigation.
