A shoebox-sized restaurant serving grab-and-go Vietnamese food has opened on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland.
Mon Superette comes from the team behind Alameda’s “‘not-so-everyday” Vietnamese restaurant, Bacogai. As the name implies, it’s set up like a little supermarket with snacks and drinks in a fridge case and a small menu of larger, hot dishes you can order to-go from the back kitchen.
Diners have a range of prepackaged, interesting-looking snacks to choose from right now. There are cute, Cubist egg-salad sandwiches ($11) and crabcake sandos made from a mix of real and artificial crab that’s deep-fried ($13). Summer rolls have a variety of fillings including shrimp, tofu, grilled chicken, garden salad and “fancy pork” ($9-$12).
The drinks include cold Vietnamese coffee, peach tea, Che Thai — sort of like a green, sweet Vietnamese dessert soup with jelly cubes — and wellness shots of fresh-pressed carrot, orange, ginger and lemon.
The hot dishes take about 5 minutes to prepare and can be called in ahead or simply ordered at the counter. On offer at the moment are imperial rolls ($9), chicken wings ($12), garlic noodles ($11) and a fried banana ($5).
