A majority of North Carolina voters supported Donald Trump in last November’s presidential election, but just weeks into his second term in office, large majorities oppose some of his highest profile policy ideas and initiatives, according to the latest Meredith Poll released Thursday.
Meredith pollsters asked likely voters for their views on an array of policy issues — both foreign and domestic — as well as a handful of North Carolina-specific issues. Results varied significantly for most questions depending upon the political party, race and gender of the voters surveyed.
Foreign policy
At the national level, North Carolinians expressed opposition to Trump’s expressed interests in annexing Greenland and Canada and retaking control of the Panama Canal, which the U.S. returned to the Central American nation in 1999.
A majority of Tar Heel voters — 60% — do not want to use economic coercion and an even larger percentage — 69% — do not want to use military power to acquire Greenland. Only 20% support the idea of economic coercion and just 14% support the use of military power.
“The idea of taking over control seems foreign to most North Carolinians,” Meredith Poll director David McLennan said. “This issue seems to be a loser for President Trump and, even though he has talked about its strategic location and rich natural resources, it does not seem very convincing to most people.”
Voters in North Carolina also do not want to admit Canada as the 51st state. Only 29% of respondents supported the idea, while 58% voiced opposition.
Trump has expressed a desire to retake control of the Panama Canal since returning to the White House. Meredith surveyors asked respondents both if they would support using economic coercion, such as tariffs, and miliary force to regain control of the canal.
Just 32% supported the economic coercion approach and even fewer — 24% — favored the idea of using military force. Opposition measured at 48% and 59%, respectively.
National domestic issues
Trump’s plan — already underway — to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education also found widespread opposition. Just 30% support the idea while 63% were opposed.
The president’s plan to fire career civil servants and replace them with political appointees was similarly unpopular. The poll measured support at 30% and opposition at 59%.
One Trump plan — opening federal lands to fossil fuel exploration and drilling — did find support. The poll found 48% of North Carolinians endorsed the idea while 35% opposed it.
North Carolina issues
For issues specific to North Carolina, two-thirds of respondents supported giving full federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe. Only 10% of voters were opposed, while about a fourth did not have an opinion.
“The strong bipartisan support for federal recognition and support from President Trump may finally result in the Lumbee gaining this important status and the benefits that come along with it,” McLennan said.
Voters also voiced strong support to legislation opening the state to medical marijuana — 71% for, 17% opposed — and the legalization of casino gambling on non-Native lands — 58% for, 32% against.
Favorability ratings for Trump and Stein
As was the case throughout much of his first presidency, Trump has a negative overall favorability — 47% approve, 49% disapprove — but those numbers reflect the strongest rating he has enjoyed since 2017.
At the state level, Gov. Josh Stein has stronger approval ratings — 58% approve, 19% disapprove. This support is bipartisan, with 53.8% of Republican voters voicing their approval.
“Governor Stein has had a good start to his term as governor,” McLennan said, “as he was offered to work across the party aisle on Hurricane Helene recovery. He has traveled to the Helene-affected areas several times.”
There were 703 respondents to the poll, resulting in a confidence interval of plus or minus 3.75%. The survey was conducted between Feb. 3 and 10.
