Golf fans have the possibility of following three of the best players in the world if they come out to Torrey Pines, where one of the year’s great tournaments, the Genesis Invitational, has been moved from Los Angeles in the wake of January’s tragic wildfires.
A featured group of three players – last year’s Genesis champion, Hideki Matsuyama, the game’s world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler and great star Collin Morikawa – are together andset to tee off at 11: 20 a.m. Thursday.
But, in all, 72 brilliant players will be out on the great Torrey Pines South Course, and a sizable number will make the cut or the weekend’s certain-to-be-exciting final two rounds.

— The Genesis Invitational (@thegenesisinv) February 12, 2025As anyone who enjoys outdoor activities – or even just the privilege of enjoying one’senvironment – those of us who live in San Diego know the regular joy of indulging in the continent’s best weather.
If there is a common complaint, some wish for more rain, but when there are a few days of stormy conditions we can be spoiled, as we are seeing this week.
A few years back, in what became a successful effort to outsmart Mother Nature’s occasional rain, the annual La Jolla PGA tour event, now known as the Farmer’s Insurance Open, was moved from February back to January on the theory that, historically, there had been fewer wet days even a month earlier in the year.
Now, just as San Diego is fortunate this year to have a second big-time PGA tour event – by bailing out the Riviera Country Club in fire-ravaged Pacific Palisades – history’s weather lesson is quite apparent.
Thus, comes the warning from the weather bureau: Genesis Invitational patrons can expect some delays, probably even a bit of a soaking, and golfers will know interruptionsare coming.
At the very least, the already difficult high rough is bound to be even more challenging if a player misses the fairway.
Torrey Pines South is already the PGA Tour’s longest golf course played and possibly thetoughest. But – not to worry too much – because come this weekend, America’s best weather will be back for one of sport’s most exciting events.
The Genesis Tournament host, Tiger Woods, is expected to be around, despite his backing out of the competition due to the death of his mother. And, let us not forget that one great golf professional is going to end up with the biggest share of $20 million in prize money!
Tickets still are available, with general admission starting at $100 for grounds access.
