Elizabeth Holmes reveals her new goals from behind bars ...Middle East

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Elizabeth Holmes was once American's youngest self-made billionaire, a star in Silicon Valley's biotech industry, and a cover girl on Fortune magazine. Today, she earns 31 cents an hour working as a law clerk for her fellow inmates in Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, Holmes told People magazine in her first interview behind bars.

The disgraced Silicon Valley entrepreneur has been in an all-women's federal prison ever since May of 2023. A jury found Holmes guilty in 2022 of defrauding investors who poured hundreds of millions of dollars into her blood testing company, Theranos.

For Holmes' new job, she helps inmates write resumes and apply for government benefits to prepare women for life outside prison. Holmes, 41, is slated to be released from prison in 2032, according to federal inmate records.

Her children, ages 2 and 3, visit for a few hours twice a week, People reported. When family visiting time is over and her children leave the prison, it "shatters my world, every single time," Holmes told People.

As the CEO of Theranos, Holmes promised to revolutionize healthcare in America by inventing new technology that could run blood tests with just a few drops of blood. Theranos machines were inaccurate and produced flawed blood test results for patients.

In custody, Holmes is again dreaming of changing America for the better. Her new mission to to fight for criminal justice reforms, People reported.

People wrote, "She recently drafted an American Freedom Act bill -- a seven-page handwritten document -- to bolster the presumption of innocence and change criminal procedure. 'This will be my life’s work,' says Holmes, adding that she is speaking out now as part of her mission to advocate on behalf of incarcerated persons and those ripped away from their children."

Holmes told People about what her new daily reality is like in prison. She wakes up around 5 a.m. and eats a vegan breakfast. She exercises by running and lifting weights.

Holmes begins working as a reentry law clerk by 8 a.m. "So many of these women don’t have anyone, and once they’re in there, they’re forgotten. Human beings are not made to be in cells," Holmes told People.

She passes the time by reading books, attending therapy sessions, and writing patents for new inventions.

Holmes told People that she hasn't given up on her dream of making healthcare affordable and getting back to her career in biotech. "There is not a day I have not continued to work on my research and inventions. I remain completely committed to my dream of making affordable healthcare solutions available to everyone," she said.

Holmes told People that she was wrongfully convicted. "I refused to plead guilty to crimes I did not commit. Theranos failed. But failure is not fraud."

During her 2022 trial, prosecutor Jeffrey Schenk said, "Elizabeth Holmes had a choice to make. She could watch Theranos slowly fail, or she could make a different decision. Holmes made a decision to defraud her investors and patients. That choice was not only callous, it was criminal."

The dramatic downfall of Theranos threw a bright light on Silicon Valley’s dark side, exposing how its culture of hype and ambition could veer into lies. Holmes' co-conspirator and ex-boyfriend, Sunny Balwani, was sentenced to nearly 13 years.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila, who presided over Holmes and Balwani's fraud trials in San Jose, sentenced Holmes to serve 11 years in prison. She will serve no more than nine years with good behavior.

At Holmes' sentencing, Judge Davila said, "This case is so troubling on so many, so many levels. The tragedy of this case is that Ms. Holmes is brilliant. She had creative ideas. She was a woman moving into an industry that was dominated by, and let's face it, male ego. This is a fraud case where an exciting venture went forward with great expectations and hope only to be dashed by untruth, misrepresentations, hubris, and plain lies."
