Another Bay Area Safeway closing due to safety concerns

(KRON) -- Last week, the Safeway in San Francisco's Fillmore District controversially closed its doors for good. That same day, it was reported another location in Pinole is set to close this April.

The trend continues as another Safeway in the Bay Area is closing. One of the grocery chain's Vallejo stores is shutting down this spring, a Safeway spokesperson confirmed to KRON4.

The location on Admiral Callaghan Lane is closing on or around April 11, according to the Safeway spokesperson. Safeway cited "ongoing safety concerns" and "financial performance" as reasons to shut down one of its three Vallejo stores.

"This decision was made after careful consideration and evaluation of the store's financial performance and ongoing safety concerns," a statement from Safeway read in part.

The employees at the closing store will be assigned to a different location. The two other Safeway stores open in Vallejo are on Robles Way and Lincoln Road.

Safeway said the Pinole store's lease ending was one of the reasons for its closure. The company did not specifically cite safety concerns. However, that was not the case for the San Francisco store.

The Fillmore location closed because of issues with safety and theft. That store was open for 40 years.
