February 12, 2025 (ADDIS ABABA) – Sudan seeks to end its suspension from the African Union (AU), a diplomatic source said on Tuesday, as the continental body holds its 46th summit in the Ethiopian capital. The AU suspended Sudan’s membership on October 27, 2021, two days after the military, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, dissolved the civilian government in what was described as a coup. The diplomatic source told Sudan Tribune that Sudanese officials have been holding sideline meetings with African officials during the summit to discuss the suspended membership. Sudan has been absent from the AU summit for the fourth year due to the suspension. The source said that the Sudanese government has given assurances that it will appoint a prime minister and transfer power to a civilian government before the end of February, in order to meet the conditions set by the AU for lifting the suspension. The AU’s Peace and Security Council will hold a special session on the situation in Sudan on February 14 on the sidelines of the summit. On the same day, a high-level conference to support humanitarian issues in Sudan will be held in Addis Ababa.
