Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson went on the kind of stretch he knew he was capable of in the backend of last season.
Going 5-0 across his final 12 starts of the season, it was a culmination of building off the ups and downs from the past year and a half and being himself paired alongside the final piece to every sports puzzle:
Execution.
That experience and the added comfortability and knowledge that came along with it will come in handy this spring training and beyond, especially given Arizona’s starting pitcher surplus even before the addition of Corbin Burnes this offseason.

But while the battle to crack the five- or six-man rotation is real this spring, Nelson remains focused on keeping things light.
“Just going to enjoy it and take every day as they come and try to get as much quality work in as I can and be the best version of myself, because at the end of the day, that’s all I can control,” Nelson told Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta on Wednesday.
“Just have fun. Sometimes you get caught up in all the extra stuff and you forget that this is a game you grew up loving and every day’s a blessing to get in here and come do what I love.”
No tinkering, just love this offseason for Ryne Nelson
Speaking of love, Nelson’s offseason included getting married recently.
You know what it didn’t have? Tinkering!
“I did not add anything,” Nelson said. “I would love to be able to add a sinker, a knuckleball, a splitter, but I think that can be a little overwhelming sometimes.
“Jack of all trades, master of none. I tried to just keep what I had and sharpen and refine.”
