Javier Assad Has a Mild Oblique Strain ...Middle East

The news on Javier Assad’s oblique injury is mixed, leaning toward good, I suppose.

The MRI did reveal a strain, but it’s a mild one, and there’s optimism that the impact will be slight.

Counsell said an MRI exam showed a "mild strain" of the left oblique for Javier Assad. He'll be shut down from throwing until symptoms subside, but the manager expressed optimism that the pitcher would be back throwing here soon.

Given where we are on the calendar, you can expect the Cubs and Assad will not be rushing this thing. On the one hand, the timing is ideal – well, if you’re going to get injured at all – because Assad wasn’t fully ramped up anyway, so it’s not like he’ll be duplicating that work. He’ll likely just be behind most of the other pitchers.

On the other hand, the timing likely means that Assad won’t have enough time to be ready to pitch in the opening series in Japan on March 18 and 19. I don’t think I have enough information to say for sure we have to mentally rule it out, but pitchers don’t always come back from mild oblique strains in just a month, and this is at the start of Spring Training. So I think we should probably anticipate that Assad will not be available for those games – he may not have pitched anyway – and the real question is whether the Stateside opening week is in jeopardy.

If it’s at all a close call, the Cubs will probably slow-play this, given that they also have Colin Rea, Ben Brown, Jordan Wicks, among others vying for that 5th starter spot.

Assad, 27, has a 3.40 ERA in the big leagues over 294.0 innings (47 starts, 23 relief appearances) since 2022. When he’s healthy, he’s been quite effective, and you’d like to have him in the mix in one role or another. He does still have minor league options remaining, for what that’s worth.
