Can you solve the Only Connect question fans are calling the ‘worst ever’?

“Deliciously devious and maddeningly abstract” is how the BBC describes Victoria Coren Mitchell’s brain-teasing quiz show Only Connect.

And never has this been more true than after this week’s episode on BBC 2 on Monday when a question cropped up which left players baffled and social media ablaze with indignation.

On Monday night, two teams – “Cat Cows” and “Four Opinions” – were battling it out on the quiz for puzzle-solving supremacy.

But both were left flummoxed and failed to find the connections between the clues they were given for one particular question.

Here’s the question which defeated them.

What was the Only Connect question?

Host Coren Mitchell posed the following teaser, a question with four cryptic clues:

Swelling: on bones Finger: at the tip of the middle finger Mouse: throughout the body Pan: in the knees

Cat Cows thought the connection between the four was “Dead” but were told they were wrong.

Four Opinions also failed to come up with the correct answer.

And on social media fans of the show were sent into a spin.

One wrote: “‘Little’ Body Parts possibly a contender for worst question ever.”

While another posted: “It’s not often I simply say “NO. NOPE. ABSOLUTELY NOT. TERRIBLE QUESTION.” on #OnlyConnect, but that “little” question was one of those times.”

And one simply said: “I’m struggling with #onlyconnect even when the answers are explained afterwards!”

    What is the answer?

In the end, it fell to the host to reveal the answer and explain it in some detail.

The connecting answer was “little”, which needed to be added to the first word of each clue to reveal different body parts.

Coren Mitchell said: “We might start with clue four.

“We surely all know the great crossword clue ‘two girls, one on each knee’?

    “Pat. Ella. Patella.

    “The kneecaps are little pans.”

Moving to the mouse clue, she said: “Mouse, from the Latin ‘mus’.

“Musculus. Little muscles and we have those throughout the body.”

For the finger and swelling clues, she explained: “The dactylion, that’s a little dactyl, little finger and little swelling – a tubercle from the Latin ‘tuberculum’, which means little swelling.’

But, as the social media posts testified, the revelations proved to be of little comfort to those playing at home.
