February 10, 2025 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has sacked Vice President James Wani Igga, replacing him with Benjamin Bol Mel. The decree was announced by the state-owned SBBC on Monday evening. The president appointed Igga as Secretary General of the ruling party (SPLM). Separately, Kiir appointed Josephine Lagu as the Vice President for the services cluster, succeeding Hussein Abdelbagi Akol. Both Akol and Lagu are members of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), a coalition of political parties. The South Sudanese leader appointed Abbdelbagi as the minister of agriculture. In another decree, Kiir also removed the head of the Internal Security Bureau of the National Security Service, General Akech Tong Aleu and appointed Gen. Charles Chiek Mayo in an acting capacity awaiting a permanent replacement. General Aleu was appointed in October last year to replace Gen. Akol Koor. The President also removed Health minister, Yolanda Awel Deng, a member of the armed opposition faction (SPLM-IO), but no replacement was announced. Meanwhile, Kiir named Tut Gatluak Manime, recently appointed as the presidential envoy for the Middle East, as South Sudan’s Ambassador to Kuwait. Gatluak had previously served as security advisor to the South Sudanese leader. (ST)
