The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions.
Philadelphia thumped back-to-back defending champion Kansas City 40-22 on Sunday night in New Orleans. It was all Eagles from the start.
Former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts broke the scoring ice with a “tush push” touchdown in the 1st quarter. It was the start of a big night for Hurts, the game’s MVP, who threw for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns to AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith.
Philadelphia took control of the game with a 17-point 2nd quarter. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was intercepted on back-to-back passes, which the Eagles turned into 14 points. The 1st interception was a pick-6 for Cooper DeJean, the first interception of the rookie’s career. The next INT helped set up the 14-yard TD pass to Brown.
It was a 24-0 game at the half. Instead of a Kansas City comeback, Philadelphia continued to add on. Up 27-0, Hurts launched a play-action bomb to Smith for a 46-yard touchdown pass. The catch made Smith the first player drafted from Alabama to score a TD in the Super Bowl. With a successful extra point, the Eagles made it 34-0.
Kansas City managed touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but it was too little, too late. Mahomes was sacked 6 times for 31 yards taken off the team passing total.
