CSU Rams take down San Diego State late Saturday night at Moby

Colorado State rebounded from a loss at New Mexico on Wednesday with a 68-63 victory over San Diego State in front of a sold-out crowd at Moby Arena in Fort Collins on Saturday.

CSU improved to 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams are now alone in third place in the league standings.

“Great college basketball game,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said. “It’s kind of what you always expect when you play these guys, a good old-fashioned rock fight. They make it difficult to score. They pride themselves on physicality and rebounding. But our guys stood in there tonight.”

Nique Clifford led the Rams with 21 points and 13 rebounds for his 10tth double-double of the season. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson added 10 points for the Rams.

CSU led 38-35 at halftime, but the Aztecs wasted no time taking the lead after the break. San Diego State went on an 11-4 run to take a 46-42 lead, but the Rams had an answer.

With just under 10 minutes left, CSU took its largest lead of the second half at 59-51. The Aztecs cut the Rams’ advantage to four before CSU increased it back to eight at 64-56 with 3:05 remaining.

San Diego State made one last run, cutting the CSU lead to 64-61 with 1:27 left, but Rashaan Mbemba and Kyan Evans went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to make it 68-61 before the Aztecs made a layup with four seconds remaining for the final 68-63 margin.

“We were able to keep taking punches and throwing our own and figure out a way to get it done,” CSU’s Ethan Morton said.

The Rams led almost the entire first half, going ahead by seven on multiple occasions. But each time, the Aztecs were able to close the gap.

San Diego State took its first lead of the game at 29-27 on a pair of free throws with 2:29 remaining in the first half, but 13 seconds later, a 3-pointer by Clifford gave the Rams back the lead and they closed the first half on an 11-6 run to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.

CSU will be on the road Tuesday for the first of two games still scheduled against second-place Utah State.
