The Catchers Part of Pitchers and Catchers, Morning Arrivals, and Other Cubs Bullets

Super Bowl prediction: nachos and ice cream and stiff-arming kids that demand my attention.

Spring Training officially begins today, with Cubs pitchers and catchers reporting to Mesa, Arizona. Of course, the majority of them have been in Mesa working already for a long time, but we have to set the “official” line somewhere. So we set it today, and we say welcome to the 2025 Cubs season. Among the catchers already in camp, Miguel Amaya has been putting in work. And that’s legendary catching coach Jerry Weinstein working with him:

    — The Setup Man – Chicago Cubs YT Channel (@SetupManKyle) February 8, 2025 I can’t say we’re “sleeping” on it, because a lot of us mention it with some frequency, but the Cubs’ catching situation really could be dramatically improved this year. Just be optimistic with me for a moment and imagine that all of the following happen: (1) Miguel Amaya’s swing tweak in the second half keeps helping him produce at an above-average offensive clip, (2) Amaya, being more settled in the bigs, takes a step forward in his game-calling and defensive work, (3) Carson Kelly’s league-average offensive season last year was legit and repeatable, and (4) Kelly continues to be a well-above average defensive catcher. If all four of those things were to happen – and all are very realistic individually! – then you’d be looking at a catching situation that goes from abysmal overall in 2024 for the full season to top 5-8 in the game overall in 2025 for the full season. The rub is that probably not all four of those things are going to happen (say each has an 80% chance of happening, then the chances all four happen are just 41%), and you are also inevitably going to have injuries. The Cubs’ catching depth is not bad at this point – Reese McGuire and Carlos Perez are perfectly fine defensively-inclined third catchers – but the arrival, or not, of a young guy like Moises Ballesteros or Pablo Aliendo to pitch in for a few weeks and be a spark could be the difference in keeping the total sum of catching for the Cubs in 2025 well above-average. Seasons are unpredictable and a lot can happen in all directions. For now, though, you root for Amaya and Kelly to stay healthy and be what we know they can be. That’s a multiple-win improvement from 2024 right there. I missed this earlier in the week, but I’d say it’s pretty clear visual confirmation that Cade Horton is coming into Spring Training at 100% after last year’s shoulder/lat injury:
