Consistent Bedard, More Donato, Where are the Young D? Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks closed their pre-break schedule with another tough loss. They were really good in the first period… and then the wheels seemingly fell off in the second (again). The second period has been an issue for the Blackhawks all season, but this was like they decided to splice a period of the game tape from the Florida game into the middle of an otherwise solid performance.

Connor Bedard goes into the break having points in 19 of his last 22 games. He has as many multi-point games as he has games without a point during that stretch, and has scored 9 goals with 14 assists over the 22 games. Since January 1, both Bedard and Ryan Donato have 16 points in 17 games. Donato has 8 goals and 8 assists while Bedard has 6 goals and 10 assists. Donato’s 8 goals since Jan. 1 are tied for 23rd in the NHL over that timeframe with the likes of Sebastian Aho, Nikita Kucherov, Matt Duchene, Kyle Connor and Tage Thompson. Pretty impressive company. Because the trade rumors aren’t going to go away until either the Blackhawks actually trade him, extend him or the deadline passes, Donato’s name came up when Elliotte Freidman gave his comments on Saturday night on Sportsnet. Friedman said he believes a few Canadian teams (he specifically mentions the Oilers) are interested in Donato. If he keeps putting points on the board every night at a $2M cap hit the Blackhawks are going to receive some interesting offers in the coming weeks.

    — Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) February 9, 2025 The Blackhawks go into the break 3-3-5 in their last 11 games. Would we like to see more than three wins in 11 games? Sure. But points in 8 of 11 against some tough competition? If we’re okay accepting baby steps… Speaking of baby steps, let’s talk about how the coaches continue to deal with the young defensemen. I mentioned this in my postgame takeaways, but the ice time distribution on the blue line left me scratching my head last night. Ethan Del Mastro skated over seven minutes in the first period — the Blackhawks’ best period of the night — but got less than six total minutes in the next two period and overtime combined. He was on the ice for two Blackhawks goals to one for the Blues. At what point are Del Mastro and Nolan Allan allowed to skate more than 14 minutes? I believe they can and (gasp) might be actually perform well with additional ice time. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen said the coaches did “some background” to determine the order of shooters for the shootout last night. A shootout that lasted 10 rounds and didn’t include Landon Slaggert or Philipp Kurashev. Okay. Y’all Obvious Shifts got it done again!

Hey how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

Aidan Thompson scored a goal for Denver in a 6-5 OT loss at Arizona State. Nick Lardis is the first player in the history of the Brantford Bulldogs to score 52 goals in a regular season. Lardis broke the record last night, the 13th straight game in which he’s found the back of the net. Here’s the record-breaking score:
