2024 CTE Champion goes to Anthony Durst for his involvement in Weld RE-5J’s CTE program

A local industry worker has transformed career and technical education programming in the Weld RE-5J School District.

His involvement with the Roosevelt High School’s construction program and dedication to advancing Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities landed him the CTE Champion designation for 2024, according to a Weld RE-5J news release.

The Colorado Association for Career and Technical Education’s award went to Adolfson & Peterson Construction’s Anthony Durst, who has more than 20 years of experience in the construction industry.

In his roles as chairman of the Weld RE-5J CTE Advisory Board and as a chairman for the Construction Advisory Board, he has spearheaded CTE initiatives at the middle and high school levels, the release said. Notably, he helped establish Construction Career Connections, a program for high schoolers that has grown from 30 participants to nearly 150 since its inception.

Durst’s involvement has created a powerful connection between the school district and the community’s workforce, merging education and industry, acknowledged by Weld RE-5J Superintendent Scott Nielsen and Rebecca Albert Vollrath, director of career andinnovation at Weld RE-5J.

“Anthony is a shining example of the power and synergy that can be created when school districts bring together community members and industry partners,” Nielsen said. “His leadership has strengthened our programs and built opportunities that transform students’ lives, preparing them for successful futures while addressing workforce needs.”

Roosevelt High School also became a state-of-the-art facility with 17 CTE pathways thanks to Durst’s role in the planning and construction process, the release said. These pathways provide skills for high-demand careers and opportunities to gain industry certifications and college credits while still in high school.

In addition to his advisory roles and construction work, Durst has facilitated scholarships, internships and job-shadowing opportunities for students, according to the release. He also secured workforce materials, including the personal protective equipment for CTE classes.

“Anthony’s contributions are a shining example of how industry leaders can partner with educators to create meaningful, hands-on opportunities for students,” Vollrath said
