A woman who drove drunk and caused a crash in Carlsbad that killed a Northern California couple was sentenced Friday to nearly a dozen years in state prison.
Angela Marie Hays, 29, of Corona, pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with the Jan. 13, 2024 crash that killed Jose Geraldo Lozano and Luz Maria Duran Rios, from Richmond.
The California Highway Patrol said the victims were in a Jeep Grand Cherokee heading south on Interstate 5 when Hays crashed into them just before 4 a.m., causing their Jeep to overturn. Another car then struck the victims’ overturned vehicle.
The woman died at the scene; her spouse was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Hays was arrested later that day. She pleaded guilty in December to all five counts she faced – including separate DUI charges – and was sentenced Friday to 11 years and eight months in prison.
A GoFundMe page created by one of Lozano’s sons states the couple had been on their way to Los Cabos. They left behind six children and eight grandchildren.
