Chicago Bears 2024 Exit Interviews: Kevin Byard III

Today, we were saddened to learn of the passing of Bears owner and team matriarch Virgina McCaskey. For more details, please read our initial report on the news.

The nightmare that was the 2024 Chicago Bears season is over. Before the transactional period starts and the roster changes begin, we will recap the seasons of most of the 53-man roster. Next up: We’re looking at the 2024 season of Kevin Byard III.

    Kevin Byard III’s 2024 Snapshot

Kevin Byard III came to Chicago on a two-year, $15 million deal last spring, and to this point, Byard’s deal was money well-spent by Ryan Poles.

Byard’s 86.0 run defense grade at PFF ranked sixth among safeties with more than 500 snaps this season. His excellence in the running game was anchored by his elite tackling ability, with a minuscule missed tackle rate of just 7.0 percent. In addition to his work in stopping the run and his career-best 130 tackles — which were the third-most among non-linebackers this past season. Byard logged a pair of sacks (matching a career-high), a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries (also matching a career-high), an interception, and seven passes defended.

All told, the Bears got their money’s worth with Byard, who played all 17 games, was a steady and reliable secondary performer this season, and was a welcomed veteran presence in a season where that unit needed it plenty.

    By the Numbers

Tackles: 130 Tackles for loss: 5 Interceptions: 1 Passes Defended: 7 Sacks: 2 Quarterback hits: 2 Forced Fumbles: 1 Recovered Fumbles: 2

    Contract Status

Byard signed a two-year deal worth $15 million last year and will be under contract through the 2025 season. Byard is set to make $5.89 million in base salary this season, another $2.61 million in signing roster, and game bonuses for a cap of $8.5 million.

    Turning the Page

Byard’s signing was a clear win for Ryan Poles as he proved to be a strong force for the Bears’ secondary in 2024. He’s under contract next season at a reasonable cap number, and I expect him to be a starter again in 2025. I’m excited to see if he can build on one of the better years in his already successful career. Chicago can save $7 million in cap space (with $1.5 million in dead cap) if they cut Byard, but they would have to invest that and then some into a free agent to replace his production. I don’t see that happening.
